Teens are often avid shoppers when it comes to everyday clothes, but when it comes to buying a prom dress, they’re often lost. Prom dresses are so different than other types of clothing that unless one has experience, they can easily buy the wrong dress and feel miserable for the entire prom evening. We’ve put together some great tips on buying prom dresses and other formal dresses to help you avoid common mistakes.
What’s the Formal Occasion?
Consider the occasion before buying a formal dress. There are many occasions that might require formal wear such as the prom or other formal dance, wedding, Quinceanera, homecoming, cocktail party, Oscar award event, and so forth. Each occasion is unique. Consider what you will be doing during the evening out. Will you dance, dine, walk, sit, move around a lot, give a speech, sing? Consider how flexible your prom dress or formal gown should be before buying.
Styles of Prom Dresses and Formal Wear
Do research online to view all the styles of prom dresses before you shop. There are many different styles, colors, hem lengths, and shapes of prom dresses that you can easily find the one that will look great on you. Some of the styles you’ll find include A-line (slimming with vertical seams and flared skirt), ball gown (natural waist line and full skirt), mermaid (fits tight to the body and flares at knees), and sheath (no defined waistline and horizontal line, great for shorter people).
Prom dresses come with different types of necklines such as jewel, halter, and spaghetti straps.

The style of neckline holds the dress it in its proper place and provides support to it. It can be either with straps, strapless, halter, etc. Whole sole decision regarding it is yours. If straps are the choice, then again it can be of tank top style or thin spaghetti strap. Strap is a piece of material that goes over the shoulder and supports a dress.
Thin spaghetti strap is the choice of many due to its womanly pattern. It possesses an exquisite quality of revealing shoulders, arms and décolletage. It is so lightweight that a woman does not even feel its presence on the body. The exclusive wrapping pattern of spaghetti straps is its enamoring quality. There is a trivia about spaghetti straps i.e., it is named so due to its resemblance to the pasta. But unluckily this fun and flirty thin shoulder style has the shortcoming of not enhancing busty women. It is not their style, as it gives protruding shape to them, thus looks awkward. They should either opt for cap sleeves, off the shoulder or strapless. Thin spaghetti strap is for skinny women having thin shoulders and shapely arms. If you fit in this criterion then thin strap is there to emphasize you.

Prom night is almost here. You’ve put on just a few extra pounds and now your tummy is starting to show just a little. And unfortunately, most prom dresses don’t leave any room to grow. But don’t worry. If you still have a few weeks left until prom night, you can take these simple steps to get those extra pounds off. You’ll feel light on your feet and glow with fashion and pride on that special evening.
Foods to Avoid until the Prom
Over the next few weeks, try to avoid foods high in carbohydrates such as pasta and bread. Check labels for substitute items or for items with fewer carbohydrates. Avoid regular soft drinks as well and replace these with diet soft drinks, Gatorade, or flavored water. Carbohydrate-rich foods as well as soft drinks tend to cause bloating in many people. Even the slightest bloating that normally wouldn’t affect the fit of your regular clothing could make your prom dress too snug. Remember, you’re going to be dancing and moving about so you’ll need some breathing room in your formal eveningwear.
Try to avoid junk foods such as snack cakes, candy bars, and potato chips. Choose healthier snacks such as baked chips, nuts and cashews, raisins, low-fat ice cream or yogurt. These can be eaten in moderation without worry of putting on more pounds.

Prom dresses are gorgeous and glamorous, but they can also be very uncomfortable. An uncomfortable prom dress can ruin your formal evening. That’s why you should consider not only the style and beauty of your eveningwear, but also the comfort level. Beauty doesn’t have to be painful. Fashion doesn’t have to ruin the most magical night of your high school life. Use the guide below to look elegant and feel great on your prom night.
Prom Dresses for Comfort
When comparing prom dresses either online or at a formal eveningwear shop, consider the material of the dress, especially for the areas of your body where it needs to give a little. Prom dresses made of stretchy material in certain areas allow you to be comfortable and flexible while still keeping in fashion.
Ask these Questions about any Prom Dress You’re Considering:
*When you bend over to pick something up, sit or twist and turn while dancing, does the dress give in areas where needed?
*When you sit to dine and need to move your arms freely, will the prom dress be comfortable?
*Does the material breathe so you won’t get too hot during the prom or dinner?
If shopping for your prom clothing online, ask questions about the material and if it gives and breathes for ultimate comfort. Order your prom dress far enough in advance so you’ll have time to try it on and return it if you absolutely don’t like it.
