Teens are often avid shoppers when it comes to everyday clothes, but when it comes to buying a prom dress, they’re often lost. Prom dresses are so different than other types of clothing that unless one has experience, they can easily buy the wrong dress and feel miserable for the entire prom evening. We’ve put together some great tips on buying prom dresses and other formal dresses to help you avoid common mistakes.

What’s the Formal Occasion?

Consider the occasion before buying a formal dress. There are many occasions that might require formal wear such as the prom or other formal dance, wedding, Quinceanera, homecoming, cocktail party, Oscar award event, and so forth. Each occasion is unique. Consider what you will be doing during the evening out. Will you dance, dine, walk, sit, move around a lot, give a speech, sing? Consider how flexible your prom dress or formal gown should be before buying.

Styles of Prom Dresses and Formal Wear

Do research online to view all the styles of prom dresses before you shop. There are many different styles, colors, hem lengths, and shapes of prom dresses that you can easily find the one that will look great on you. Some of the styles you’ll find include A-line (slimming with vertical seams and flared skirt), ball gown (natural waist line and full skirt), mermaid (fits tight to the body and flares at knees), and sheath (no defined waistline and horizontal line, great for shorter people).

Prom dresses come with different types of necklines such as jewel, halter, and spaghetti straps.

For many girls, prom night is the most important event of their high school years. It’s not an understatement to say that you’ll remember your prom night for the rest of your life. Given its prominence during high school and beyond, it’s crucial that you wear a dress that makes you feel and look your best.

Before You Start

Before you even start shopping for prom dresses, spend some time thinking about your personal style. If you like to blend in with the crowd, you probably won’t be comfortable in show-stopping bright red pageant dresses. On the other hand, if you like the spotlight, you may want to shy away from formal dresses that are reminiscent of a bridesmaid’s gown.

Keep in mind, though, that prom is a great opportunity to take a step outside your comfort zone. You’re probably not accustomed to wearing evening dresses, so all prom dresses will seem a bit foreign to you. If you’ve always harbored a fantasy of being a storybook princess, a prom dress can make you feel like royalty. Likewise, if you’ve always wanted to showcase your inner sultry siren, beaded cocktail dresses will let you dip your toes into those waters.

See What’s Available

Once you’ve thought about your personal style, go online to a site that specializes in prom dresses and see what’s available. You’ll likely find evening dresses by designers like Sherri Hill, Jovani, Nightline, Faviana, and many more. Spend time considering the type of dress that will make you feel great and let you shine on your special night. Are you comfortable with strapless gowns, or do you prefer straps? Do you like the shimmer of sequins and beading, or the rustle of tulle? Do you want to show skin and go with a backless gown or one that shows off your midriff, or are you more comfortable with a solid bodice? Are you bold enough for a thigh-high slit, or do you want a long dress with a train?

Now is the time to start searching for prom and homecoming dresses for 2006. It’s nice to allow yourself plenty of time, so you can relax and enjoy checking out all those gorgeous dresses before you decide which one is going to be absolutely perfect.

Before you begin searching for your prom or homecoming dress, you should have a clear idea in your mind of whether you’re looking for a full formal, semi-formal or dressy casual style. Most high school proms are full formal, so it’s the perfect opportunity to wear that full length ball gown you’ve always dreamed of, or the kind of sophisticated formal dress you would reserve for the most glamorous occasions.

A homecoming dance or event will usually be less formal, but the dress code will depend on the event and on your particular school’s tradition. The best way to get an idea of the kind of outfit which will be most appropriate is to just ask the senior students, or graduates if you know any.

Now is the time of year when the major trends are beginning to emerge for the coming season. There are a number of looks which are shaping up to be the big trends for 2006, so you have plenty of choice.

Prom and Homecoming Fashion Trends for 2006

Black is the new black. Of course, classic black never really goes out of style, but the sophisticated black dress will be one of the strongest trends for the 2006 prom season. Slinky shapes with glamorous floor length skirts are the main focus.

Bold, dramatic black and white will also be an important look, in particular the classic black and white paneled bodice with a solid white A-line skirt. We’ll also see solid black dresses with dramatic white detailing.

Winter white is still an important look, particularly with silvery beads and details.

Colors for 2006 will be bold and dramatic. Soft pastels have most definitely made way for striking rich reds, dazzling blues, sparkling golds, sunset yellows and even tangy citrus orange tones. If you like to be really daring with color, this will be the year for bold contrasts of two or more strong colors.

The sexy Grecian style gown is tipped to be a particularly hot look for the 2006 season, after Kelly Clarkson really turned heads with the stunning gold silk dress she wore at the VMA Awards in August. If you have a sensational figure, now is the time to really show it off!

Strapless ball gowns were the main attraction at the Golden Globe Awards in 2005, worn by everyone from Kim Kattrall of ‘Sex and the City’ to ‘Friends’ favorite Lisa Kudrow, so we’ll be seeing a lot of this fabulous celebrity style in the upcoming prom season.
